First discovered in 1937 by Franklyn F. Bond then forgot about until 1975 when Professor John A. Endler rediscovered them in Laguna de los Patos in northeastern Venezuela.
they are similar to the guppies found in all lfs but are smaller in size, approx 25mm for the male and 50mm for the female. there are a ray of colours and patterns available and they are generally easy to keep and breed.
they will breed with guppies so should not be kept in the same tanks.
the males are the ones with the colour and there many patterns are availavle, such as yellow top sword, white peacock, black bar, red line and the list goes on. females tend to be olive green in colour
they are live bearers and will produce live fry every 30 days or so.
they prefer harder water with a neutral to high ph, but are very flexible so should be OK in most waters providing extremes are avoided.
please be care full when buying endlers as there are many mixed hybrids out there, many being sold as pure.
if you are lucky enough to find some good stock, snap them up. they are a fab little fish
My mistake. I was referring to Gambusia, also a livebearer. These can mix with small African Cichlids. But livebearers are very hardy and can withstand brackish water for a period of time, but not as a permanent home. Although show Guppies etc are not as hardy.
I am not sure what you mean by aggressive. The males are only about an inch long, and apart from chasing the females to breed, they do no harm at all. You can get female Endlers Livebearer Fish with colour in, but this is not desirable in pure strains, as it can interfere with the breeding of the pure lines. There are so many hybrids about, so you need to buy from a reliable source, otherwise you will get poor stock/hybrids.
Why would you want to keep Guppies/Endlers in brackish water?
They will never replace the guppy. These retain pretty much the same colour and pattern, whereas the female is grey. Who wants a grey boring small fish. when the guppy females have assorted colours and the males and better looking? Also, the Endlers Livebearer Fish are aggressive, depending on what fish and how many males. I've kept these for about 7 months, and they were trash, a lot smaller brood sizes than the guppies and not as hardy. The guppy can withstand brackish water for a period of time, but these can't.
They are an easy little fish to keep with fabulous colours, not fussy eaters and a lot hardier than most guppies found in your local aquaria shops.
