Clarkes Restaurant, Bath

What a lovely bistro! I had been afraid that on the Saturday evening it would be congested and thus unpleasant, yet it wasn't when I paid a visit, therefore I had the joy of being able to look into it personally and talk pleasantly with my visitors.

Your wine menu was intriquing, notable and the bar personnel particularly proficient and very helpful. I can't wait to get back there and try more food or conduct a drinks sampling.

My sister reviewed Clarke's on TopTable late last year and the restaurant seems to have been removed since. So I feel compelled to publish my feelings about the place on here so that other visitors to the city of Bath don't fall victim to the disappointment that we did.

Having planned a sight-seeing visit to bath, we booked Clarke's for the Saturday night as we'd found a discount voucher online that cleared showed it was valid for Saturdays. Out first impression of the place was that it was cramped and the waiter was pushy and intimidating. The food was slow and I ordered a veg tart which was so bland and second rate that I had to leave it.

By the time our bill came we were keen to leave and explore the nicer establishments of Bath, but when it arrived, they told us the voucher was not valid. We told the waitress that the website had said it was valid on Saturdays and that we had even phoned the restaurant to check prior to our visit. She told us that none of the staff would have told us that it was valid and basically continued to suggest that we were lying. After much debate she finally agreed to give us the discount and we left our cash, minus the tip that had been automatically added to the bill.

Like the other reviewer here, we also emailed them to complain and received no response. It was an appalling restaurant, making an unpleasant start to what was otherwise a great weekend. I'll be returning to bath, but certainly not to Clarke's.

I used to love Clarks restaurant but unfortunately I have now had a few bad experiences here and won't be going back.

The food is fine, not of the wow factor but usually very edible. However, the service and staff are very unfriendly to the point of making you feel as though you are an inconvenience rather than a valued customer.

We were pre-warned when booking a large party that they had 2 sittings at the weekend and we would need to be off the table by 9. The manager came over to our table at 9 and said'Right the next people are waiting for the table' and gestured for us to leave.

We would not have left a tip had the waitress brought back our change and we had not been ushered out and had we not been so astonished to think more quickly to complain! After complaining about this in writing I have not received a response which reflects the attitude, very poor I'm afraid.
