The Mother Of All Keyboards. Nothing Else Comes Close.
Firstly, I must point out that the Model M keyboard is no longer made by IBM, though the company Unicomp continue to make them. This review is about the IBM model.
If you are reading this review, chances are your computer has a standard rubber dome keyboard (meaning that each key sits on a rubber dome which when depressed actuates the key). In layman's terms this keyboard that I am reviewing has a metal spring underneath each key.
Compared to a standard keyboard, the comfort and response is far greater than a rubber dome keyboard. The keys make a very nice (and loud) positive 'click' and because you don't need to depress the keys all the way to the bottom, the strain on your fingers is much reduced. This keyboard is also built like a tank, with a very strong plastic body and the keys themselves are mounted on a very thick steel plate. However this makes the keyboard very heavy indeed; you will need two hands to lift it.
This keyboard is more for the typist than a gamer, as there are no extras whatsoever, like backlighting, programmable keys, media control keys etc. It is strictly a tool for typing on. Another thing that may be of issue to some people is that the clicky sound is too loud, but then again this is a subjective issue, so it will come down to personal preference.
Be warned though, Once you have typed on a buckling spring keyboard, you won't ever want to use a rubber dome keyboard again. This is one of the best keyboards you can buy.
