Hardware

This unit consists of a wireless keyboard, optical mouse & USB receiver, also supplied are a receiver extension/holder and batteries.

The Keyboard is a small slim design (32x16x1.5cm) and is basically the same as a notebook keyboard (but no num-lock) is has 7 extra keys (Power €" for PC, next, back, reload, home, search & mail). The mouse is small, but not too small (9.5x5.5x3.1cm) of the optical type with 4 buttons, with a nice solid feel to it. The receiver is a tiny dongle (5.6x1.7x0.8) and the extension holder allows the receiver to be positioned up to 1.5m from the PC.

Installation

Couldn't be simpler, installed supplied batteries, plugged receiver into USB port, windows (XP) did its thing and that's it everything worked perfectly. I could not find a way to change the keyboard shortcut keys, but then I didn't need to.

Use

I bought this set primarily as an accident with some wine had killed my laptop keyboard, and £250 repair from Sony seemed excessive, so £17 for this set was a much better deal plus I find it more convenient typing on the wireless keyboard than I did on the laptop one.

The keyboard has a sort of A shape to the keys, which is supposed to minimize RSI, the keys have a solid feel and layout is otherwise standard (for a laptop keyboard). There is a recessed button underneath that's for synchronization/keyboard power, though I haven't needed to use it so far.

The mouse is a nice solid optical unit with a scroller wheel/button, 2x button as well as the standard 2 buttons. Its also has a recessed button underneath for synchronization/power. Resolution is fine for my purposes, artists may need more though.

Power

The units main claim is its low power use (7mA), this seems mainly to apply to the mouse, I assume the keyboard uses less. I has 4 automatic power saving modes, from idle after just 200mSec (consumption dropped by 75%) to full off after 30mins. I cant say how long the batteries will last as I haven't had to replace them yet (1 months use).

Summary

A very nice little set that work faultlessly, I wasn't sure I needed wireless before, but having used it the extra freedom it gives is definitely a bonus, and for the price I think you cant go wrong.
