Mellieha Bay In Malta

The town of Mellieha is very quiet 'out-of-season' but it was quiet & restful we wanted so found it OK. We've been once before during summer time & it's much livelier. This time we took a 'long stay' option over December into January just gone. Friends let us use their holiday apartment whch was very nice & spacious. Many of the places in town are closed for winter but we had internet use and found a few good places to recommend. The Rebekah restaurant which is not easy to find(or cheap)but was well worth it for the food which is fantastic and, in the main town, the l'Escargot restaurant which is much more reasonably priced & casual but equally good value were the ones we tried from those mentioned at maltamaltamalta.com. The Mellieha Bay beach area is wonderful even though there was no one there at the time and Mellieha is also well placed for a trip to Gozo, the next island along, as it's only 2 miles from the ferry terminal. The open top bus tour also passes thru & is a good way to see the rest of the island. Others we met said St Julians and even Bugibba are probably a bit busier in winter but we had no real complaints with Mellieha, perhaps if we were younger we may have found it too quiet.

We would tend to agree with most of this review even though we went during May when it's obviously a bit busier. The website mentioned has useful tips including a recommendation for H2o diving nearby. We were nervous about taking "the plunge" even though the wonderful Maltese sunshine and calm seas beckons anyone to try scuba dive. I quickly overcame any initial fears and was soon being introduced to the delights of Malta's underwater world by the friendly and professional instructors at H2o & I was delighted by this introduction to the world of wrecks, caves and marine life, with amazing visability "down there", I plan on visiting them again in Malta for more diving experiences.
