Tin Shed Experience, Laugharne

I went along to this new wartime museum on their first day of opening after following its progress through social network sites. I am a regular visitor to Laugharne in the summer and first stumbled across this project around 18 months ago. I walked past a green tin sheeted building to find 2 mannequins of german soldiers against a blitzed out background! The chap told me that he was an avid collector of militaria and was hoping to renovate the building which had been built in the 30s and turn it into a 40s museum. On my visit I was amazed at how well the building has been renovated, it looks pretty much the same from the outside except for better condition recycled sheets and a fresh coat of paint but the interior was not that of what I remember! They have added buildings behind the museum (anderson shelter and a new tin cottage) and hope to open them up to visitors once they put in a proper access. Inside the museum is currently a D-day display which looks fantastic. Its not the Louvre and is what it says it is a Tin Shed but the artifacts are very interesting and hard work has definatly gone into building the sets for the larger exhibits. One thing at the moment is that it needs more on show. I have been told that more display cabinets are on the way and there is plenty more to go in the museum. What is to note about the place as it is largely being run by volunteers from the community so some of the staff are not as knowledgeable about the exhibits as others, there are however, information cards to help you out. If you are there when one of the owners are there they are more than willing to chat and its Simon? who will be able to give you in depth information on pieces as its his collection. He told me some really interesting things about his experiences as a photographer on film/tv and magazine. He was in Band of Brothers and worked on Saving Private Ryan so its well worth having a chat with him. The entrance fee is £3 for adults which may be considered by some as a bit much but in a fortnight or so when more exhibits are added it will be well worth it. I can't wait to come back in future to see how its progressing.
